    Of course I completely agree with all of this. But how the heck can we push our high schools to focus 95% of the time on talent development when state regulations require that our students spend 95% of their time on requirements, many of which are areas of great weaknesses? It’s impossible to get IEPs unless you have severe limitations. So our kids just have to get Cs and Ds in all their classes that focus on their weaknesses??

      I hear you on this one! We made a decision to send our son to a “choice” school in our district (Big Picture School model) that deviates from typical standards and instead allows the kids to work on their areas of talent through internships and projects. This model has worked much better for our son.

      Melissa – 100% agreement. Why do they need to fail before they can get an IEP? Why wait until the anxiety and destruction of self-esteem and self-worth happen before they’re deemed “disabled” enough to get help?
