    Love the reminder of “Checking in to see if this is still working” at least once a year and that if homeschooling now -does not mean homeschooling forever and if need too – its also okay as long as we respect the timeline the child is on 😉

    My child is differently wired, but not 2e. My child tends to cycle, and the periods of struggle can often feel like constantly putting out fires. It means that when my kiddo is doing well, and is available and accessible to learning and skill-building, we struggle to find the balance between allowing for recovery and enrichment, while also trying to take advantage of the break in the clouds for learning and growth. The anxiety around a “timeline” really resonates.

    I appreciate all the thoughtful content in these videos. It does strike me, however, that you are speaking to people of privilege. It’s great to talk about home schooling, switching schools going private, options that I was able to do with my child. There must be plenty of 2e kids who come from families that don’t have the means to take these opportunities. I’d love to see something that addresses what they can do, even if they don’t have the means to join the idea lab.

      I agree. I appreciate and get so much form this forum and community, but… Really important comment, this goes across the board, with testing, schooling, tutors, etc. Whenever I bring it up in any forum it’s basically ignored. 2E is becoming quite a boutique business where I live… there’s also a lot of 2E mis-labeling because it is such a lucrative business.

      I agree there is inequity in how people are able to support their 2e kiddos, and this is unfortunate. All kiddos, not just 2e ones, deserve a quality education and services to help them grow into their potential. Not many of us can do all of the “optimal” things – private schools, evaluations, multiple extracurriculars, ongoing services, etc. For our family it came down to working with the system we’re in (choosing a public “magnet” school option), me advocating A LOT for what my son needed, using free enrichments like Khan Academy, taking advantage of school-based extracurriculars, and subscribing to a handful of parenting forums and podcasts. I personally became a part of the B&Q team and IdeaLab because of its mission to offer a community and shared platform with high quality information and coaching from national 2e experts that I wouldn’t be able to afford on my own. I think raising a 2e child requires a great deal of creativity in determining how I can get the most out of the resources we have. It’s not an easy path, but the exchange of ideas about how others are doing this is a gift for me.

        I’m with Lauren – my family unit is not rich or privilege and we give up a lot to be part of the IdeaLab, but where we live is no blooming 2e opportunities – we homeschool with very little, but we think outside the box and we apply what we learn in the IdeaLab and then also share that with our friends who are not able to link to the Internet. I think the B&Q is about what the experts bring, but also about what we as parents do with that. Riching out to those around us, sharing what we have learnt … that is how the even less privilege can be supported and helped too. So let’s be positive and reach out!

    Thanks to Debbie Reber for your suggestion” How do I accept and respect the time line the child is on, and trust that he will “catch up” with support and scaffolding?” As well as “checking in” to ask, “Is this still working, what is, what isn’t and where do we need to pivot?” Wonderful ideas that I’m sure can give some peace to parents and kids.

      Sharon, I loved that comment too. As people and parents, we have to remember that learning is not linear and it is at the learner’s pace.
